Update - 2 Skiffs,16 Pirates, RPG's - Attack Cable Layer in Red Sea, shots fired


NYA Piracy Update - 13:37.5N - 042:35.9E Attack within the Bab-el-Mandeb

Dear sirs,

Please be advised that following the Maritime Security Alert for East Africa dated 22 July 2016, the following information has become available:

The ICC-IMB confirmed that 16 pirates on board two skiffs armed with AK-47 assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) approached and fired upon a cable layer vessel installing cables.

The alarm was raised, SSAS activated and the non-essential crewmembers retreated to the citadel. The Armed Security Team on board returned fire, resulting in the pirates aborting the attack and moving away. All crew is safe.
