Two events reported to MDAT-GoG this week.One supposed-theft attempt on 30th January and one time late report concerning a robbery occurred on 25th January.

25/01/2017 Robbery 9NM/250° from Freetown (Sierra Leone)

Description: On 25th January 2017, at around 00:35ZHrs in position 08°27.00’N / 013°25.00’W (Freetown-Sierra Leone).

Three assailants with knives boarded a bulk carrier anchored in Pepel anchorage. The assailants were spotted on the vessel’s forecastle and the alarm was raised. According to reports, the assailants threatened one crew member before escaping with stolen ship’s store.

30/01/2017 Theft attempt 9NM/250° from Freetown (Sierra Leone)

Description: On 30th January 2017, at around 03:45ZHrs in position 08°27.00’N / 013°26.00’W (Freetown-Sierra Leone). Two supposed-thieves boarded the vessel. They jumped overboard whilst general alarm sounded. Nothing was reported stolen.

At this time, MDAT-GoG cannot confirm if assailants were thieves or stowaways. Investigations are in progress. MDAT-GoG Comments:

The both events occurred at the same place and during the night. Increased vigilance is highly recommended when anchoring this area (Freetown anchorage).

The MDAT-GOG has been in operation since 20 June 16. Some vessels / masters are still attempting to register with the now closed MTISC-GOG. Masters and CSOs are urged to ensure they have the correct details; that can be found on SHOM Chart 8801CSD or UKHO Chart Q6114, 30 June 2016, to allow them to report their vessels when transiting the revised Vessel Registration Area (VRA), also described on both security charts with the MDAT-GOG, using the email address
