Plague outbreak in Madagascar

IMO has issued a circular informing that a plague outbreak in Madagascar has spread to the capital and port towns, according to World Health Organisation. So far, there is no justification at this stage for restrictions on travel or trade, however, operators are advised to review specific guide issued by WHO which draws attention on lessons learned from recent disease outbreaks to provide substantive public health guidance.

1 The purpose of this circular is to provide guidance on the plague outbreak in Madagascar issued by the World Health Organization (WHO).

2 According to the information provided by the WHO, there is no justification at this stage for restrictions on travel or trade.

3 Further updates will be provided as and when received from the WHO. 4 Member States, intergovernmental organizations and non-governmental organizations in consultative status with IMO are invited to consult the Handbook for management of public health events on board ships. This WHO publication is a comprehensive text that draws on the scientific literature and lessons learned from recent disease outbreaks to provide substantive public health guidance.
