Events reported last week
2 events of sea theft reported last week (37 incidents since the start of the year compared to 18 at the same date in 2019);
1 of the 2 incidents was on tanker underway (Singapore Strait) - 1 on bulk carrier anchored (Taboneo anchorage, Indonesia).
Dangerous areas identified:
Singapore Strait: 21 incidents in 2017, 20 in 2018, 45 in 2019, 14 in 2020 (only 5 events in Singapore strait between January 1 and April 30 in 2019). This is the second highest number of events at this time of year in the last decade, after 2015.
Sulu Sea: constant threat from the terrorist group Abu Sayyaf and other criminal groups that are targeting slow-moving targets with a low freeboard. Last incident occurred on 16/01/2020 with a kidnapping at sea against five fishermen on a fishing vessel. Request of a 580 000 $ of ransom by ASG still in progress;

Indonesia: Batam, Begawan, Belawan, Dumai, Panjang, Sandakan, Samarinda and Taboneo;
Philippines: Manille, Batangas, General Santos Harbour;
Vietnam: Vung Tau, Ho Chi Minh;
India: Kakinada, Alang.
20/04: A collision occurred between an Indonesian government vessel and a Vietnamese fishing vessel north-west of Anambas island. Vietnamese fishery vessel sunk. The Indonesian side maintained four research vessels to rescue 4 Vietnamese fishermen, at the request of Vietnam. The Vietnamese Coast Guard also sent ship CSB 8005 to the scene of the incident. On 28 April, Vietnamese Ministry of Defense announced that search and rescue operations for the four missing fishermen in Indonesian waters had failed;
22/04: A local cargo vessel caught fire at vicinity 300 meters off wharf, Baliwasan Zamboanga City, Philippines. Coast Guard Station Zamboanga deployed one Coast Guard vessel BRP Malamawi after receiving the report of a fire onboard a water craft. With the assistance from the Bureau of Fire Protection, the fire was contained while all four crew were rescued. Based on initial investigation, while underway to anchorage area, a fire broke out from the engine room;
24/04: Ferry with 102 passengers on board suffered engine failure in Sunda Strait, south of Bakauheni, Sumatra, while en route from Jakarta to Panjang, Sumatra.
22/04: The Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries captured a Filipino vessel with seven foreign fishermen onboard and a Taiwanese vessel with ten foreign fishermen onboard, during illegal fishing activities in the Sulawesi waters.
22/04: Hong Kong officers seized 162 tonnes of meat and arrested 15 local men working on two barges in the biggest seizure of its kind this year.
