Last incident occurred on 16/01/2020 with a kidnapping at sea against five fishermen on a fishing vessel. Request of a 580 000 $ of ransom by ASG still in progress;
The threat level has been downgraded back to normal due to previous actions taken by Philippines and Malaysian authorities, including increased patrols. The area remains risky. Ships are encouraged to continue taking additional preventive measures and maintain strict anti-piracy watch in these waters ;
Small boats, tugs and fishing vessels remain the most vulnerable to ASG operations. It remains to be seen whether the ASG or its subsidiaries retain the capacity to attack merchant ships with larger freeboards. With nearly 400 ASG activists, vigilance must remain in order.
