PIRACY/ROBBERY

  • One Sea Theft reported on a tanker anchored off Merak Anchorage, Indonesia;

  • Total events in 2020 : 53 incidents since the beginning of the year in IFC area of responsibility (compared to 32 at the same date in 2019);

  • Areas of interest:

  • Singapore Strait: No event reported the last week. 21 incidents in 2017, 20 in 2018, 45 in 2019, 17 in 2020 (10 events at this date in 2019);

  • Sulu Sea

  • Last incident occurred on 16/01/2020 with a kidnapping at sea against five fishermen on a fishing vessel. Request of a 580 000 $ of ransom by ASG still in progress;

  • The threat level has been downgraded back to normal due to previous actions taken by Philippines and Malaysian authorities, including increased patrols. The area remains risky. Ships are encouraged to continue taking additional preventive measures and maintain strict anti-piracy watch in these waters ;

  • Small boats, tugs and fishing vessels remain the most vulnerable to ASG operations. It remains to be seen whether the ASG or its subsidiaries retain the capacity to attack merchant ships with larger freeboards. With nearly 400 ASG activists, vigilance must remain in order.

  • Indonesia: Anyer, Batam, Begawan, Belawan, Dumai, Merak, Panjang, Sandakan, Samarinda, Taboneo and Tanjung Uban;

  • Philippines: Manille, Batangas, General Santos Harbour;

  • Bangladesh: Chittagong;

  • Vietnam: Campha,  Ho Chi Minh, Vung Tau;

  • India: Kakinada, Alang.

CONTRABAND

  • 12 June: The Malaysian Customs Department in Sarawak has seized 354,800 Cartons of illicit cigarettes at Bintulu port ;

  • 13 June: The Indonesian authorities sunk a vessel, which carried the 30 kilograms of smuggled crystal meth, that came from Malaysian territory into the Riau coastline.

  • 10 June: The master of a Vietnamese fishing vessel said that a Chinese CG vessel (No. 4006) had chased and rammed his boat, forcing all of its 16 crew members to jump overboard. The Chinese Coast Guard patrol vessel and a Chinese speedboat crashed into a Vietnamese fishing vessel, QNg 96416 TS, operating near Lincoln Island occupied by the Chinese, part of the Paracel Islands in South China Sea;

  • 15 June: Fire engulfed several ocean-going fishing vessels in Yanpu Fishing Port, Pingtung County, Taiwan;

  • 16 June: A fire broke out in a general cargo ship's cargo hold area, while the ship was underway, moving from Vung Tau to Ho Chi Minh City port;

  • 18 June: A General Cargo ship collided with a container ship off Tahara, eastern Honshu, south of Nagoya, Japan.
