Three events have been reported to MDAT-GoG this week
180°/50NM from PORT HARCOURT, NIGERIA
At 10:30Zhrs in position 03°34N – 007°02E, a cargo ship has reported a suspicious approach by 1 skiff. The MV increased its speed to 20knots and made contact with the local authorities. After 30minutes the pirates stopped their pursuit. Nigerian navy have liaised by radio with the crew and sent a Naval patrol ship for support.
41 NM FROM SAN BARTHOLOMEO RIVER
At 16:20Zhrs a merchant vessel was attacked by a speed boat with ten armed pirates. Pirates opened fire on the MV, the armed guards on the MV returned fire, the pirates then abandoned the attack. It is possible that the pirates are the same pirates that had attacked morning of the same day.
We received a phone call from CSO of a cargo ship who advised us about an attack occured on her ship at 0015Z. The ship was attacked by 5 armed pirates who climbed on board and immediately opened fire on the security team injuring 2 members of the security team.They took control of the ship and asked for the cargo but the ship had already discharged its cargo at Cotonou.
Pirates left the ship with their hostages on the rescue boat of the ship, they also stole money and personal effects of the crew members.
The two wounded men were evacuated to hospital by the BENIN Navy. The ship is safe, no technical damage reported, waiting for update.
130°/32NM from TAKORADI, GHANA
At 12:00ZHrs, in position 04°31.2N - 001°21.5W, a cargo ship has reported suspicious approach by 2 boats. The vessel increased its speed to 17.5knots and made contact with the local authorities. Pirates stopped their pursuit.
